Password security

Creating strong passwords for online security

To protect your business online, create a different, strong password for each account it uses.

One way to create a strong password is to select three random words. This makes it hard for a fraudster to guess, but easy enough for you to remember.

Add numbers or special characters to make it even stronger. The longer the password, the stronger it is.

Tips on password security

  • Your email account can hold lots of sensitive details about your business. If a fraudster breaks into this account, they could use it to:

    • Access business, personal and banking details.
    • Send messages that pretend to be from you to trick others.
    • Enter your other online accounts.
    • Reset your passwords to take control of your accounts.

Make sure you have a strong password for your email account. If necessary, create a new one then do the same for any other accounts your business may have, such as:

    • bank, or
    • Social media accounts.
    • Make it strong and long - Select three random words. Add special characters, capital letters and numbers to make it even stronger. The longer it is, the harder it is to guess.
    • Make it hard to guess - Fraudsters can try to find out things about you or your business to help them guess your passwords. So, avoid using any personal and business details or names.
    • Create more than one - Select a new, strong password for every account your business holds, and for every website it may use. Do the same for any security questions that you need to create.
    • Use 2 Factor Authentication (2FA) - If you can, use 2FA. This will give you an extra layer of security on top of your password, such as confirming a code sent to you by text or email.
  • You need a different password for every account or website your business uses. If you’ve many passwords to remember, you may need some help.

It’s safe to store your passwords in a web browser or with a password manager.

When you create a new password, many browsers will ask if you want to save it. If you save a password on a browser, make sure the device you use is secure.

To keep a device secure, get the latest version of the browser and operating system and keep them up-to-date.

Never share a password or any other sensitive details with colleagues. If a colleague needs access, they must ask for their own login details.

How to use a password manager

Your work phone, computer or other device may have a password manager app to help save your passwords.

Some password managers can also enter your passwords automatically, making it easier to log in to websites and other apps.

Before you use one, check out all the features and make sure it’s secure. And always keep your password manager up-to-date.

Make sure you create a very strong password to unlock your password manager.

  • We use two-factor authentication (2FA) to make sure it’s really you using your online account.

So, even if a fraudster guesses your password, this extra security makes it harder for them to get into your account.

For 2FA to work, we need to send a code to you by text or landline. To be able to do this, please make sure we have your latest business phone number.

Only fraudsters message or call you in person to ask you for a code, or to get you to enter one into a card reader.

We’ll never call to ask you to follow a link to log in to our online banking page.

Always use our genuine line to log in. Save Online for Business https://onlinebusiness.lloydsbank.co.uk or Commercial Banking Online https://cbonline.lloydsbank.com on your device.

If other online providers and apps use 2FA, turn it on as it will help to keep you safe.

Contact us right away if you think someone else knows your banking details.
