After spotting a gap in the baby skincare market as a new parent, Casyo Johnson built Nala's Baby into one of the UK's fastest-growing baby toiletries brands. Now, as a winner of Channel 4 and Lloyds Black In Business, he's preparing to take the brand to an even bigger audience.

When Casyo Johnson became a dad, he started paying closer attention to the ingredients in the products being used on his daughter, Nala.
Together with Nala's mum, Sasha, he struggled to find a baby skincare brand that met the standards they wanted as parents while remaining affordable for everyday families. Rather than settling for what was available, he decided to create something himself.
"The most precious thing to you is your child. Everything you do for them, you want to be the absolute best.“
That idea became Nala's Baby, a brand built around products that are dermatologist and paediatrician-approved, suitable for sensitive and eczema-prone skin, vegan, cruelty-free and accessible to families at affordable prices. For Casyo, the business was about more than creating products. Having worked in music and entertainment, he wanted to build something lasting that could one day be passed on to the next generation.
"She was my driving force to say, 'We're going to make this happen. We're going to bring this to life’.” After spending more than a year developing formulations and working with manufacturers during lockdown, Nala's Baby was ready to launch.
Despite its success, Nala's Baby continues to compete against some of the biggest and best-known brands in baby skincare.
For Casyo, that made Black In Business an opportunity he couldn't ignore.
"I saw it as an amazing opportunity to get ourselves onto a level playing field. Being able to get an advert on TV was a no-brainer for me.“
As one of this year's Black In Business winners, Nala's Baby will receive £200,000 of TV advertising, a bespoke TV advert and six months of tailored business and marketing support.
But for Casyo, the value of winning extends far beyond television exposure. The programme offers access to mentorship, advice and connections that can help the business navigate its next stage of growth while introducing the brand to more families across the UK.
He also hopes the initiative will help shine a light on Black-owned businesses and inspire other entrepreneurs to pursue their ambitions.
Casyo Johnson Founder, Nala’s BabyAny opportunity you get to speak to people about how you can grow and network with people is invaluable.
Casyo's immediate goal is to make Nala's Baby the UK's number one baby toiletries brand. Longer term, he has ambitions to grow internationally and expand the brand beyond skincare into new categories for babies, children and families. He believes winning Black In Business can help accelerate that journey by raising awareness, opening doors and supporting the business as it continues to scale. "Just that little boost, little push and little support can make a world of difference."
Whatever comes next, Casyo says his motivation remains unchanged. The business was created for his daughter, and her name remains at the heart of everything he is building.
"I've got a brand that has my daughter's name on it, so I'm motivated every day for this business to succeed. Every time I say the name Nala's Baby, it always boils back down to her.“
