Opening your own salon has probably been a lifelong dream which has only become a reality through hard work, determination and passion. This is why it's so important to protect your livelihood with salon insurance.

Public Liability insurance

Your clients will come to your salon to look and feel better, but the treatments that you carry out to make them feel this way are not without risk. This is why you need specialist public liability insurance. It includes cover for injury or damage as a result of a treatment and can offer protection in the event of a client making a claim against your business with the cost of compensation and legal fees being covered. Public liability insurance isn’t a legal requirement but is invaluable should a client become injured or their property is damaged while visiting your salon.

Employers’ Liability insurance

If you have anyone working for you in your salon, even if they’re employed on a casual or temporary basis, you’re required by law to take out employers’ liability insurance. Most businesses with employees must have the insurance in place to cover any claims from staff members who’ve been harmed as a result of working for you.

Buildings Insurance

If you own the building where you run your salon from, then this is designed to cover the rebuild and associated costs incurred following a claim. It will also cover any permanent fixtures and fittings if they were to become damaged following an insured incident such as a fire or a flood.

Business Interruption

If your salon falls victim to a flood or fire, you may not be able to operate your business for a while. Business interruption will cover you for a reduction or loss of income caused by such an insured event. As a hairdresser, beautician or nail technician you may be able to continue yourbusiness elsewhere while your salon is out of action. In such circumstances, Increased Cost of Working cover could help with the expense of renting another space to trade from.

The flexibility of salon insurance means that it's able to cover a wide range of beauty businesses. So, if you're a beautician, hairdresser, nail technician or makeup artist, chances are you'll need salon insurance.

It doesn’t matter how carefully you run your salon or how qualified your staff are; unforeseen events can result in your business being negatively impacted. By having salon insurance in place, you’re not only demonstrating that you’re a responsible business owner and employer, but it can also give clients peace of mind that they’re in safe hands while they’re enjoying their haircuts, manicures and facials.

Accidents can and do happen in busy salons; no matter how careful you are. So, whether it’s a nasty burn caused by faulty curling tongs or a broken arm as a result of slipping on some shampoo, you need to be sure that you're protected should one of your clients become hurt. This is why Public Liability insurance is so important. The minimum is £1m public liability, but you may want to consider getting more so that you're not left out of pocket if the worse happens.

And it’s not just your clients that can get injured in your salon. If you have one or more employees working for you, then you'll also need Employers’ Liability insurance. This cover is a legal requirement, and secondly, it protects against the costs of an employee claiming compensation, when you’re found to be negligent for injury or illness suffered whilst working for you. So, if an employee attempts to sue you for causing injury or loss in the course of their work, you can be reassured that you have the right insurance in place.

As with most salons, you’ll have your regular clients that you’ve worked hard to build up over time. You can’t put a price onthe value of your regulars because it can cost significantly more to attract new clients, particularly if your salon is in an area where there’s a lot of competition. Because of this, if you’re unable to trade due to an unforeseen event, you’ll risk losing more than just money while your salon is closed. If your regulars have to visit another salon while you’re closed, they may decide to continue having treatments at your competitors’ going forward. Business interruption insurance is key to getting your salon back up and running as quickly as possible.

If your business is impacted by one of the following events, then you’ll be eligible to make a claim:

  • Fire, smoke, lightning, explosion and earthquake
  • Escape of water or oil from any tank, apparatus, pipe or appliance
  • Storm or flood
  • Impact
  • Theft or attempted theft
  • Subsidence, landslip or ground heave
  • Accidental damage and malicious damage

Your claim will be assessed on an individual basis by a dedicated case handler.

Yes. Stock, including professional products and equipment, can be covered by contents cover which you can add to your salon insurance policy. This way any items that you sell, expensive equipment that is necessary to run your salon and business-related contents such as computers, desks and shelving, can be covered in the event of an insured event.

Clients visiting salons tend to pay in cash, so chances are you’ll handle money during your working day. If money is lost or stolen and you have selected this optional cover, your policy will typically include the following cover sections:

  • From your salon during business hours
  • While in transit
  • From a bank night safe
  • From a residential address (for a smaller amount)
  • While out of a safe, out of hours
  • While in a safe, out of hours

If you have anyone to help you run your shop, then it’s very likely that you’ll need Employers’ Liability insurance. Most employers are required by law to have at least £5 million of cover in place or face a fine of up to £2,500 for every day they are not properly insured. As this type of cover is a legal requirement, make sure you discuss your circumstances with an insurance specialist so that your business is fully protected.
