Frequently asked questions
-
There are a few types of home insurance, the main ones being:
- Contents insurance – covers the cost of repairing or replacing your possessions if they are stolen or damaged while in your home
- Buildings insurance – covers the structure of your home and its fixtures and fittings if they are damaged by events like flood, fire or storm
- Combined buildings and contents insurance – covers both buildings and contents under one policy. This could be simpler than applying for two separate policies.
-
It isn’t a legal requirement for you to have buildings and contents insurance, however if something happened to your home or belongings, it should give you peace of mind to know you’re covered.
You’re likely to need buildings insurance if you’re:
- A homeowner – if you’ve got a mortgage on a property, your lender may insist that you have buildings insurance in place
- A leaseholder – if you own a leasehold property, the freeholder may insure the building as a whole. It’s important to check the details of your lease agreement to find out if you need your own cover
- A landlord – you’ll need buildings insurance for any property that you rent out.
-
A number of factors can influence the cost of your home insurance premium, whether you’re looking for buildings, contents or combined cover.
Your circumstances and needs, including:
- Your age
- The value of your home or contents
- Whether you’ve made claims in the past
- The age and size of your home
- Whether you live in an area with high flood or crime risks
- The amount of excess you choose to pay in the event of a claim
- Optional extras, such as legal expenses and away from home cover.
