Fine-tuning the asset blend

Markets are by nature unpredictable. So our portfolios allow us to fine tune the overall blend of asset classes to take advantage of short-term opportunities.

This process, known as tactical asset allocation, allows us to respond quickly to market conditions. We look for situations with the potential to generate extra returns. In fact, we design our portfolios so we can make adjustments quickly, while remaining within the overall strategy for your investment profile. This process is something individual investors may find difficult to get right on a consistent basis.

Active and passive management

A successful portfolio also relies on the right blend of two key investment strategies, active and passive.

Passive management is cost effective and aims to match a market’s performance by investing in it broadly. In contrast, active management relies on the skills of a fund manager to pick assets they believe will perform better than the market.

Both approaches have their advantages and we use a mix of passive and active strategies to help diversify our portfolios.
