Early success and the complexities of scaling up

Founded in February 2024, Manchester-based United Canning has rapidly established itself as a specialist manufacturer for natural, innovative drinks. From additive-free, health-conscious beverages to syrups supplied to the high-streets major retailers, the business reflects the deep technical expertise and passion of its founder, Raphael Ogunrinde.

Raphael – who moved to the UK from Nigeria in 2007 to study and pursue a career in food quality management – founded United Canning to support clients on formulation, market insight and small-batch production. The team supports some of the UK’s fastest-growing beverages firms, including KAYTEA, Bloomin, Agua de Madre and Sabeel Date Water.

As an established Lloyds business customer, United Canning has already drawn on the bank’s products and services to support its early growth. But as the business matured, it became clear that financial tools were just one element in Raphael’s growth phase. While he had the technical capability to bring these products to life, building a manufacturing operation at scale is an entirely different challenge.

As United Canning prepares to transition into a larger, high-capacity facility in Middleton, Greater Manchester to meet the influx of demand, Raphael recognised that he needed guidance on the many demands that come with growing a business.

A mentorship that transformed the business

In June 2025, Raphael attended the Birmingham Black Business Show where he met Dave Atkinson, UK Head of Manufacturing for SMEs & Mid-Corporates for Lloyds, giving him an opportunity to speak about his business. Impressed by his ambition, Dave offered to mentor him – a relationship that has since become central to United Canning’s journey.

Dave has provided grounded, practical support in areas Raphael previously navigated alone. This includes vital insight on governance and structure, building the right legal and financial support around the business, establishing clearer departmental responsibilities and developing processes that allow Raphael to step back from hands-on production and operate as a strategic leader.

Through regular sessions, Dave has supported Raphael to strengthen United Canning’s foundations as it plans the next stage of significant expansion, including creating new jobs as well as increasing demand from UK and overseas markets.

Building capacity and giving back

Once fully operational, the new facility will be capable of producing up to 30,000 cans and 15,000 bottles per day. This will create a step change in capacity that will unlock new job opportunities, increase market demand in the UK and overseas, and set the firm on track to achieve its target on £1.5m in turnover by 2026.

Recognising the importance of accessible support, Raphael also mentors young people and members of the disabled community who are interested in manufacturing, helping open doors for those starting their own journeys.

Dave’s support has been invaluable in my journey as a young, Black entrepreneur. His insight into how a manufacturing business should be structured has transformed the way the company is growing.
