Abel joined Lloyds Banking Group in 2021 after a 25 year career spanning international banking and corporate in a range of strategy, finance and commercial roles. He was most recently Group Treasurer of Rio Tinto, a FTSE 100 mining company, with global responsibility for corporate finance, structured and project finance, global treasury operations, pensions and insurance, and a member of its Finance Leadership Team.
Abel is passionate about business transformation, ESG and the role of technology in unleashing efficiency and growth. He works closely with the bank’s extensive coverage, product and delivery teams, including capital markets, project finance, and ESG.
Abel holds Masters degrees from Toulouse and London Business Schools respectively and a post graduate degree in International Economics and Finance from University Paris Dauphine.

Within the UK, Lloyds Bank is committed to supporting UK manufacturing in all regions and ensure proximity to our clients. That’s why we pledged £10 million to the Manufacturing Technology Centre, to help train more than 3,500 manufacturing apprentices, graduates and engineers by 2024.
Our highly experienced team has built up a wealth of cross sector expertise, across Commercial Aerospace, Defence, Airlines, Aviation, Chemicals & Gases, Metals and Materials, Capital Goods, Packaging, and Building Materials. Lloyds has a dedicated team focussed on the transportation sector recognising this was will be a decade of significant change as we decarbonise the sector. We work with clients across three distinct subsectors – automotive, passenger transport and logistics.
- Automotive: We support global OEMs throughout the supply chain, including end business users, such as leasing businesses and dealerships, with their core funding via Loans, DCM & ABS with associated hedging requirements. Our trade finance and cash management products help to make the trade cycle as smooth as possible from export to import. We also support end consumers through our consumer finance division - Lex Autolease & Black Horse. We are also the lead pension provider via Scottish Widows to a number automotive companies.
- Passenger transport: We work with UK-focused airlines, bus and rail operators, and manufacturers. We support our clients with traditional bank lending, capital and financial markets services, and asset and infrastructure finance.
- Logistics: The transportation of goods is a growing marketplace – especially in the age of ecommerce. We help our clients in the UK and overseas to benefit from this ever increasing demand.
Our society is built on infrastructure and our support for UK Infrastructure is wholly aligned to our ambition to Help Britain Recover. We support clients across a wide variety of sectors including airports, ports, roads, rail, schools, hospitals, construction businesses and the full supply chain. Infrastructure is an important growth driver within the UK economy and a cornerstone sector for Lloyds. Construction alone contributes tremendously to the UK economy, employs over 3 million people, and supports 374,000 businesses.
Our team offers a full range of banking services – from debt finance and risk management solutions, to transaction banking tools. We have a market leading Infrastructure & Project Finance team which has been active since 1992 and has a long history of providing innovative financing solutions across the full spectrum of infrastructure sectors. Furthermore we work with insurance division, Scottish Widows, to provide long dated financing to support essential economic and social infrastructure projects in the UK.
Power & Utilities form a key part of the UK’s critical infrastructure, generating clean power and delivering electricity, gas and water to homes and businesses nationwide via a network of regulated utilities. Our clients are at the heart of the drive to Net Zero whether developing renewable generation in offshore wind and flexible electricity storage, reinforcing the grid to support the switch to electric vehicles, converting existing gas networks to greener hydrogen or conserving, delivering and recycling our water.

The Energy & Commodities team has a specialist remit offering all the banks’ corporate, structured and commodity finance requirements for participants in the energy and extractive industries.
On a global setting, our clients include integrated energy, integrated mining, and commodity traders with regional focus on refineries, energy services and exploration & production (E&P). We have a long history supporting North Sea E&P clients and we take great pride in supporting them with their decarbonisation initiatives through this decade of transition.
We are product agnostic and therefore are responsible for ensuring our clients have the right capital instrument available at the right time. This includes revolving facilities, working capital, vanilla and structured trade, term facilities, renewable & project finance and reserve-based lending. In addition, we are the conduit for financial risk management through LBCM in the form of interest rate, FX and commodity risk management enhanced by our capital markets debt advisory team with capability in the UK & USA.
