Black In Business 2026 – Applications now closed

Black In Business is back, offering Black-owned businesses the opportunity to accelerate growth through TV advertising, in partnership with Channel 4.

Read more about last year’s winners

  • Kameese Davis: It's been phenomenal, I think.

Rose Ovensehi: Honestly, you can still pinch me. It's still such a dream come true.

Eugina Pierre: I knew he was going to win.

Kameese Davis: When I saw the advert for the Black and Business opportunity, I had to apply. It wasn't so much inspiration. It was like, I need to apply for this opportunity. First and foremost, I think what it's done from a customer awareness perspective is really give our customers in the UK amazing trust signals for the brand. We saw 20% increase in sessions, 21% increase in unique visits, and a 42% increase in new customers. There was definitely a halo effect as a result of  the Channel 4 ad.

Eugina Pierre: In 2008, Mike's dad, Paul, owned a Caribbean food takeaway restaurant in Peckham called Caribbean Spice. So, him and his dad decided to open up Flake Bake. Since then, they became Southeast London's biggest Jamaican handmade patty manufacturer. As a business, having your advert on TV is like a dream.

Since April 2024, we've sold over 3 million patties in Aldi and it's helped to increase our in-store presence and online presence. The Channel 4 TV advert delivered over 9 million views. We had 124% increase on online orders month-on-month. There was a 900% increase on searches for ‘Jamaican patties’ on Google over three-month basis.

Rose Ovensehi: We've been growing the business over the last seven years, and we wanted an opportunity to raise brand awareness. When the campaign went live, we saw 131% increase in the search term for Flora and Curl, which is absolutely significant. So, customers were looking for us. We showed the advert to the Tesco buyer, and she loved it and also to the Boots buyer as well. I think it gave us that edge and that credibility as a brand.

Q4, we would have been considered for a range expansion and Tesco decided to expand us.

Gbemi Okunlola: The platform that Channel 4 has is a platform that I might not necessarily be able to reach that amount of people as a company. So just being able to be on such a large stage and being able to get our products and our brand out in a way that we haven't done so before would be an amazing opportunity.

Rose Ovensehi: For us, it's about expanding the range and we're looking to launch some new accessories very, very soon. So hopefully, yeah, our customers will be very pleased.

Eugina Pierre: So, we have developed a new line of products with our new manufacturer, which is due to launch in Aldi soon.

    Kameese Davis: World domination.

    Hi, I’m Mike Williams

    00:03

    Co-founder of Flake Bake

    00:04

We make some of the best

    00:06

Handmade Jamaican patties in South East London

    00:08

    This time last year

    00:09

    I didn’t even think

    00:10

We were going to be supplying Notting Hill Carnival anymore

    00:13

But Lloyds Bank has been incredibly supportive during our growth

    00:17

They’ve helped us to profile Flake Bake

    00:20

And we’ve recently switched our business banking to them

    00:21

Notting Hill Carnival is all about celebrating

    00:24

    Caribbean culture

    00:25

And our patties are a staple

    00:26

We’ve been supplying Notting Hill for the last 12 years

    00:29

Last year, we supplied 40,000 patties

    00:31

But this year, we’re supplying 150,000 patties

    00:35

Notting Hill Carnival is not just our busiest time

    00:37

But it’s actually the best time of the year for us

    00:40

My favourite part of Notting Hill

    00:42

Is meeting all my street food vendors

    00:44

The biggest thing that’s happened to us in the last 6 months

    00:46

    Is winning a TV show

    00:48

We’ve been able to supply to

    00:50

    Europe’s biggest retailer

    00:52

We’ve sold out in less than 48 hours

    00:54

And we gained so much exposure

    00:56

That now we’re preparing for our biggest

    00:58

    Notting Hill carnival season ever
