When two childhood friends from Zimbabwe joined forces to launch their own driver recruitment agency in 2019, they were confident they could make waves with an innovative new approach.
Sean Munyati and Taurai Jiri are the co-founders of London-based Complex Recruitment, which specialises in supplying drivers for the logistics and retail sectors. They started the business in 2019 after Taurai had already started his own recruitment agency five years earlier, and Sean felt that together they could be a force to be reckoned with. Managing Director Sean said: “We had a lot of knowledge of how the sector worked, so we decided to take a chance. Taurai had been a great friend since we went to school together, and I felt he'd be a great mentor and role model.”
Soon after Complex launched, the country was put into lockdown, which proved to be an unexpected boom for the business as demand for its services surged.
Taurai Jiri Finance Director, Complex RecruitmentPeople were stuck at home and doing a lot of shopping online, which meant we grew very rapidly. We never wanted to start small; we went after the biggest contracts we could straight away, like Amazon and Argos. At our peak during the pandemic, we had up to 175 drivers on the road on any given day.
Today, Sean and Taurai are focused on the fundamentals; winning new clients and providing the highest quality service. The business enjoys revenues topping £5 million, with a team of 10 staff split across offices in north and west London, serving around 70 clients, including DHL, XPO, Hotpoint and more.
And Sean and Taurai are working to double revenues to £10 million by taking a different approach to their competitors.
Taurai Jiri Finance Director, Complex RecruitmentA key innovation for us has been the concept of in-house drivers; experienced drivers who are always on hand to jump in at short notice if a client is let down by another agency. It’s become an important USP for us, helping us to win the trust of clients and prove they can rely on us. It also means we can deliver driver assessments, training and compliance in-house.
Taurai adds: “One of the lessons I’ve learned is that you can grow too quickly and spread yourself too thin. Our strategy now is to is to continue building our client base and our driver base to ensure we are the strongest agency within the M25. We are also looking to expand into other industries in the capital which we feel are not too congested, including healthcare and construction.”
Sean and Taurai credit Lloyds support as fundamental to their success, providing day-to-day banking as well as funding to support investment in technology to drive compliance and back-office efficiencies, including Customer Relationship Management and Enterprise Resource Planning systems.
Taurai said: “We started banking with Lloyds pretty much straight away and they have been absolutely fantastic. Our Relationship Director Paul Keaveney has been very hands-on and he's always there to help us with whatever we need.”
Paul Keaveney Commercial Relationship Director, LloydsSean and Taurai have applied their in-depth industry knowledge, drive and entrepreneurial instincts to establish themselves in an incredibly competitive market, building a business that has a very bright future. They’re doing things differently and we’re backing their ambition as they explore more opportunities to grow and innovate.
