Global events of the past year have spawned recurrent turbulence and resurgent volatility. Abrupt changes to global trade, coupled with considerable market swings and the reorientation of sustainability policies have all had a consequential impact on almost every country – and every company – around the world.
The business environment has therefore become less predictable with more frequent market dislocations and a pervasive sense of uncertainty. The more fluid landscape is making it challenging for businesses to adapt to the new reality with confidence. It is now more difficult to plan, invest and grow, as business leaders and their treasury teams grapple on a day-to-day basis with managing change while maintaining stability.
Resilience and optimism have, however, remained the dominant sentiments among businesses in the UK. The challenging landscape offers opportunities to diversify and fortify operations to become more resilient and better prepared for further change. The main test for businesses will now be how they seek – and respond to – these opportunities to successfully navigate the changed environment.
