Out now: Place-based approaches to net zero

This report, developed in partnership with edie, maps out the unique drivers and opportunities present in most regions of the UK when it comes to achieving sustainable growth, as a result of four regional roundtables and a survey of 100 business leaders.

UK businesses are at the forefront of driving sustainable action ahead of the country’s 2050 goals. To meet the UK’s transition goals, requires more than a one-size-fits-all-approach: as every region has its own challenges, businesses must acknowledge and meet these diverse indicators head-on, creating unique and place-based approaches to sustainability that incorporate the drivers, needs and challenges of each region.

To understand these challenges and opportunities, a series of roundtable discussions took place. These roundtables convened local business, housing, academia, local authority, NGOs, finance and sustainability leaders to discuss the barriers and solutions driving their net zero goals.

Following those discussions, this report distils that information into a clear and detailed examination of the needs and opportunities present in each of the UK’s regions reported on. It also draws from a nationwide survey, conducted by edie, which gathered the detailed insights of 100 decision-makers and executive-level representatives of SMEs through to large, high-turnover businesses.

The undertaking that led to this report – four roundtables spanning the UK, and a survey that took in 100 responses from UK businesses – was a significant project that yielded undeniable results. This report, created by edie and in partnership with Lloyds Corporate & Institutional, is the result of that hard work, containing vital information that helps inform our understanding of the net zero transition, and where the most critical action is needed.
