Our aim is to improve the lot of UK manufacturers by raising awareness and understanding of their achievements and potential within Westminster, Whitehall and more broadly regionally and locally, ultimately to get a better policy deal from government and more enthusiastic recruits to work in our sector.
Our rationale is that government and opinion formers take more notice of organisations with critical mass, than they do of smaller, individual trade associations.
But by working together as independent organisations within the Alliance, each association retains the flexibility it needs to represent sector specific views, for example on technical standards, co-operate at an individual association level with others or come together across a broader front when member companies share similar supply chain concerns or frustrations round government policy.

The MTA exists to promote the interests, and be the voice, of the manufacturing technologies sector in the UK.
The Manufacturing Technologies Association is the UK’s trade association for companies in the manufacturing technology sector. MTA members design, manufacture and supply the advanced machinery, equipment and intellectual property that enable the creation of the products we rely on from day to day and that drive our economy.
Key aspects of manufacturing technology include; machine tools, cutting tools, metrology (measuring) equipment, additive manufacturing (3D printing), surface finishing, robotics and computer aided design and manufacturing products (CAD/CAM), as well as the technology which is enabling the digitisation of manufacturing – the fourth industrial revolution. These combine to make up complete systems - increasingly automated and adaptive - that manufacturers deploy, making the sector fundamental to the prosperity, health and defence of the nation.
The MTA delivers: marketing support and networking opportunities; specific and relevant economic and technical information; representation to Government and other stakeholders; help for exporters; and support for learning and development within member companies and beyond.
Established in 1919 the MTA has been at the core of the UK’s engineering based manufacturing economy for almost a century.
Founded in 1987, the PPMA Group of Associations (‘PPMA Group’) now comprises three specialist trade associations: PPMA (Processing and Packaging Machinery Association), BARA (British Automation and Robot Association) and UKIVA (UK Industrial Vision Association).
With almost 600 member and affiliate member companies, the PPMA Group is the voice of the processing and packaging industry; representing businesses in the UK, as well as those exporting overseas.
The Group’s principal purpose is to assist in the sales and marketing of industrial processing equipment, packaging machinery, ancillary products and services, robotics and machine vision, though erudite industry leading events, publications and regulatory training.
The success of the PPMA Group is central to the success of its membership and active role it takes to explore new markets and opportunities to raise brand awareness. The Group is also a member of several trade alliances to help lobby the UK Government on key industry issues.
In 2014, PPMA Group set up and now sponsors PPMA BEST (Business, Education, Skills and Training): a separate charitable arm to addresses the ongoing skills gap in engineering.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) is one of the largest and most influential trade associations in the UK. It supports the interests of the UK automotive industry at home and abroad, promoting a united position to government, stakeholders and the media.

With some 186,000 people employed directly in manufacturing and 856,000 across the wider automotive industry, it accounts for 12.8% of total UK export of goods and invests £3.65 billion each year in automotive R&D. More than 30 manufacturers build some 70 models of vehicle in the UK supported by 2,500 component providers and some of the world's most skilled engineers.
