  • What are Travellers Cheques?

American Express® Travellers Cheques are cheques that can be exchanged for local currency around the world. They are safer than cash, and if lost or stolen can be replaced worldwide. They are also handy for budgeting, tracking, and controlling your travel expenses.

    Using Travellers Cheques

You can use your Travellers Cheques like cash to pay directly for products and services at any retailers, restaurants and hotels that accept them.

    • You may need photo identification when you use your Travellers Cheques.
    • We can’t guarantee that all places accept Travellers Cheques as a form of payment.
    • Sign all your cheques in the upper left-hand corner and write down their serial numbers as soon as you receive them.
    • Always keep your list of numbers in a separate place, away from your Travellers Cheques – you’ll need them if your cheques get stolen.

Exchanging your Travellers Cheques for local currency

You can exchange your Travellers Cheques in thousands of banks and foreign exchange locations around the world.

    • You may need photo identification.
    • We strongly recommend you keep and carry your purchase receipt with you when you travel.
    • There may be commission charges and these may vary by country or exchange partner.
    • There may be exchange limits because of local regulations and exchange policies.
    • To find the most convenient place to exchange your Travellers Cheques, visit the American Express® exchange location website.

    Find your nearest exchange location

    • Report all facts of the loss or theft to the police if American Express® asks you to.
    • Give American Express® the serial numbers of the lost or stolen Travellers Cheques and the place and date of their purchase.
