Let's break it down

Good to know

  • Most credit cards charge a fee of around 3% on each transaction you make in a foreign currency, whether at home or abroad. That fee may not apply when using a travel credit card.
  • Overseas payment providers could charge a currency conversion fee if you choose to pay in pounds sterling instead of local currency.
  • As well as cash withdrawal fees, most credit cards also charge an exchange fee on foreign currency withdrawals. That fee may not apply when using a travel credit card.
  • Travel credit card features might vary. Make sure you understand all limitations, terms and conditions before you apply.

Understanding costs

  • Only paying the minimum will cost more in interest and take longer to clear your balance.
  • Interest is charged from the day cash is withdrawn and until you pay it back. Some cash machine providers may charge a fee.
  • Interest will be charged on purchases unless you repay your balance in full each month. Other credit card fees and charges could apply.
  • If you pay late or miss a payment, fees might apply, and it could damage your credit score.

Let’s look at the details

  • Transactions made outside the UK are subject to the variable exchange rate set by Mastercard or Visa.

The rate you pay depends on when the transaction is processed by your card provider. Usually, within a few days of the original transaction date.

  • On card purchases

A foreign exchange fee could apply to each transaction.

    On cash transactions

Foreign exchange and cash transaction fees could apply when:

    • withdrawing non-sterling currency from a cash machine
    • buying non-sterling currency over the counter at a bureau de change, bank or Post Office.

Some credit cards offer travel-related features – either as standard or for a limited time – which could help you limit any non-sterling transaction fees.

  • You can withdraw non-sterling currency or buy travel money over the counter using a credit card. But it’s important that you understand the costs.

As well as standard interest, foreign exchange and cash transaction fees could apply. So, you might want to limit cash withdrawals to emergency situations only.

    Cash transactions fees

Some travel credit cards waive the non-sterling cash fee as an account benefit, helping to limit extra costs. Before you use your card, it’s worth checking the terms of your account, just to make sure you understand what fees and charges might apply.

  • With Lloyds, you don’t need to tell us in advance before taking and using your credit card abroad.

We’re always working to protect your accounts, wherever you are.

Other providers might ask that you tell them before using your credit card abroad, so make sure you check before you travel.

    Protecting yourself from fraud

  • To take advantage of your card issuer’s currency conversion rate, we usually recommend paying in local currency.

  • Draft credit card account terms and conditions (PDF, 382KB)

We'll send you a full set of terms and conditions specific to you once you’ve been accepted for the credit card.

  • Our responsibilities to you

Lloyds is a responsible lender. We only want you to borrow what you can afford, in a way that’s best for you. The outcome of your credit card application depends on our assessment of your circumstances.

You can talk to a member of our team about the choices you've made. They’ll also be able to talk to you about your options if you’re experiencing financial difficulties.

    A note on fraud

You won't have to pay us for any unauthorised postal, telephone or internet transactions made by someone other than you or an additional cardholder. But you and any additional cardholders must take all reasonable measures to protect your account.

You should never tell anyone your PIN. You can give suppliers your card details and won’t be liable if they misuse them. But if you’ve given someone else your card details, you’re liable for all transactions unless you’ve told us they’re not authorised.
