Why get an agreement in principle?
How to get an AIP with Lloyds
It’s quick and easy to apply for an AIP online.
- Start your application online. It should take about 10 minutes.
- We’ll need to know about your income, outgoings and addresses for the last 3 years.
- We’ll do a soft credit check. This won’t affect your credit rating or your ability to borrow in the future.
You'll get an instant decision if you apply between 6am and 10pm Monday to Saturday, or 6am and 9pm Sunday. Otherwise, we'll give you a decision the next day.

You should aim to get an agreement in principle before you start viewing properties if you’re looking to buy a home.
If you’re remortgaging, you might want to apply for an AIP a few months before your current deal ends. That way, you could avoid being moved on to your current lender’s SVR.
-
After you get an AIP, you can start searching for a property or apply for a mortgage.
If you’re looking for a house, estate agents may ask to see your AIP before any viewings. When you’ve found a property, you can go ahead and complete your mortgage application.
-
If a lender refuses your agreement in principle, you can reapply with the same or other providers. But try to understand why they refused so that you can address the issues before you reapply.
-
Applying for an AIP won’t affect your credit score. We’ll run a soft credit check when processing your agreement in principle. This shouldn’t affect your ability to borrow in the future, and other lenders won’t see it.
