Things to consider about solar panels

Are solar panels right for my home?

Solar panels will work for most homes.

Things like the direction, angle and size of your roof will affect how much energy you’ll capture.

  • Roofs facing south with minimal shading from trees or buildings are the most efficient.
  • Solar panel systems facing east or west tend to capture 15 to 20% less energy than south-facing systems.
  • The more panels the better. A 10 to 20m2 roof can deliver up to 45% of an average household’s electricity.

Find out more on how they work from Energy Saving Trust.

The cost of solar panels

The cost of your installation depends on the number of panels you choose to install and whether you include a home battery in your system.

The standard price of an 8-panel system with a battery at Effective Home is around £8,500, including installation.

You could claim a discount if you use our trusted installation partner Effective Home.

If you’re an eligible Lloyds mortgage customer, you could also claim £1,000 cashback on your solar panels or battery with the Eco Home Reward.

Do solar panels need maintenance?

Solar panels can last at least 25 years, making them a great way to save energy in the long-term.

Remember that if you have a solar inverter, you need to replace this after around 12 years.
