How to switch bank accounts

Step 1

Apply and choose your switch

  • Open a new Lloyds current account online or in the app.
  • During your application, we’ll ask if you want to switch – just say yes.
  • Have your existing account details ready – including your debit card number.
  • Pick the date you’d like your switch to happen.

Step 2

Relax – we’ll do the work

  • The switch takes 7 working days.
  • You can keep using your old account until the switch is complete.
  • We’ll update you along the way and confirm when it’s done.
  • Your switch is protected by the Current Account Switch Guarantee.

Step 3

On your switch date

  • We’ll transfer your balance and close your old account.
  • We’ll transfer your payee details, so you don’t need to set them up again.
  • All your payments move over – both the money coming in, such as your salary, and the money going out, such as direct debits.
  • We’ll redirect any payments sent to your old account and give the sender your new details.
  • Although many things are switched automatically, we won’t:

    • transfer regular payments and subscriptions set up using your old debit card details. You’ll need to contact each service provider to update your payment information
    • update digital wallets, such as Apple Pay or Google Pay. Simply remove your old debit card and add your new one when it arrives
    • transfer any arranged overdraft you have with your old account provider. More about overdrafts and switching
    • transfer your statement or transaction history. You should be able to download or request copies from your old account provider.
  • Working day 1

We’ll contact your old account provider to start your switch.

    Working day 2

We’ll confirm that your old account provider has received your request. We can then start moving your regular payments to your new Lloyds current account.

    Working day 3 to 5

It’ll take a couple of days to transfer all your regular payments, and make sure everything is ready for your chosen switch date.

    Working day 6

If you choose to pay off the overdrawn balance on your old account as part of your switch, please make sure there’s enough money in your new Lloyds account to cover this payment on the seventh working day of your switch.

    Working day 7

We’ll transfer your balance and close your old account. Your switch is complete.

    After your switch

Any payments sent to your old account will be automatically redirected to your new Lloyds current account. We’ll also give the sender your new details for future payments.

  • The Current Account Switch Service offers a simple, reliable and stress-free way to switch your current account from one bank or building society to another. And it only takes 7 working days.

As your new current account provider, Lloyds offer the following guarantee:

    • The service is free to use and you can choose and agree your switch date with us.
    • All your payments move over – both the money coming in, like your salary, and the money going out, such as direct debits and standing orders. And we’ll take care of moving them all for you.
    • If you have money in your old account, we will transfer it to your new account on your switch date.
    • We will arrange for payments accidentally made to your old account to be automatically redirected to your new account. We will also contact the sender and give them your new account details.
    • If there are any issues in making the switch, we will contact you before your switch date.
    • If anything goes wrong with the switch, we’ll refund any interest and charges applied to your old or new account as soon as we’re told, whether that interest was paid or lost, and whether the charges happened because of this issue.

  • You might have given authorised third parties permission to access your account information, or to make online payments for you. These permissions won’t be transferred when you switch, so:

    1. before your old account is closed, check whether you have any third-party permissions in place

    2. if you want to restore these permissions once your Lloyds account is open, you’ll need to contact each third party and give them your new details.

To check whether third party permissions will be supported when you switch, you can contact us or read personal banking terms, conditions and charges guide (PDF, 315KB)

    • have applied, and been approved for an arranged overdraft on your new Lloyds account.

How do you apply for an arranged overdraft?

At the end of your current account application process, we may offer you an arranged overdraft. If we do, we'll tell you the maximum amount you can have and you can add it right away. You can also apply for one later.

What happens if I am overdrawn and want to switch?

We will show you the maximum amount of arranged overdraft we can offer you before you complete your switch request form, if we are unable to offer you the full amount you will need to make arrangements with your bank to pay back the remaining amount. If you’ve already got a current account with us you can log in to online banking or the mobile banking app to see if there’s an option to extend your arranged overdraft.

  • 3 months 0% interest free overdraft when you switch

An arranged overdraft can act as a useful safety net. You can use it to borrow money up to an agreed limit through your bank account.

See your personalised interest rate on your statement or in online banking. This interest‑free arranged overdraft offer is not guaranteed and can be withdrawn at any time.

What happens after the 0% interest free period ends?

Once your 3 month interest-free period ends we’ll charge interest daily. The daily arranged overdraft interest rate will be based on how you manage any accounts with us and on the credit information we hold about you. We will let you know this rate in the pre contract credit information we give you if you apply for an arranged overdraft.

  • Representative example

An arranged overdraft has a variable interest rate of 29.9% EAR, and a variable representative rate of 29.9% APR, based on borrowing £1,200.

APR (Annual Percentage Rate) shows you the annual cost of borrowing. It includes the interest you’ll pay as well as the monthly account fees, if your account has them.

    How does our overdraft compare?

You can use the representative APR to compare with other products or credit providers, this can help you make sure that you choose the right type of borrowing for you.

How much does my overdraft cost in pounds and pence?

As an example, the interest cost of borrowing £500 is: £2.45 for 7 days, £10.73 for 30 days and £21.68 for 60 days.

Arranged overdrafts are subject to application and approval and repayable on demand. You must be 18 or over to apply. Arranged overdraft limits and interest rates vary based on your individual circumstances.
