Preparing for a breakdown or getting stranded

Over the years we've seen an increase in motorist being caught out by extreme weather conditions. If you are planning a long car journey there are things you can do in advance just in case you get stranded or breakdown.

Here are some hints and tips on how to protect yourself:

  • Bring a set of basic tools such as a shovel for digging out and torches. Consider charging extra battery packs for your phone so that you can stay in touch with loved ones or contact the emergency services if needed.
  • Keep a set of warm clothes in the car, if possible include thermals and waterproofs, to protect against wet and freezing weather conditions.
  • Put a comfort pack together containing personal items, medication, food items such as high energy bars or chocolate and bottled water.
  • Consider a sleeping bag just in case you get stranded in extremely bad snow. If you don't have a sleeping bag and you have a first aid kit handy, check for a foil blanket to wrap yourself in.

Get your car serviced

Getting your car serviced every year is important. Cars need to be serviced on a regular basis to keep them running at an optimum level. This becomes even more important during winter when cars are more likely to breakdown.

Servicing your car can:

  • maintain the performance of your car
  • enhance fuel economy
  • extend the life span of the car
  • reduce the risk of your car breaking down.

If you're not sure when your car was last serviced, there should be a record in the cars service log. If the car hasn't been serviced in a while it's a good idea to either book your car into a local garage or car dealership.
