Platinum Jubilee Pageant
We are proud to partner with the Platinum Jubilee Pageant. For over 250 years we have supported the people and businesses of Britain and Her Majesty has reigned for 70 of those years.
The Pageant is a way to celebrate her lifetime of commitment and service. But also to look forward to a future that sees Britain continue to prosper in ever more inclusive and sustainable ways.

The 1960s - The introduction of computers
Lloyds Bank got its first computer in 1961. After installation, 2,000 customer accounts from our Pall Mall branch went onto the new system. We were the first high street bank to have all our branches computerised - just in time for decimalisation, when the British currency changed from shillings, florins, and threepence to 5p, 10p and 50p.

The 1970s - Automatic cash machines
In 1972, the first Cashpoint machine was installed, in Brentwood, Essex. The Cashpoint was the UK’s first online real-time ATM and was the first time customers could immediately withdraw money from a machine which debited their account straightaway. It wasn’t until 1977 when the first through-the-wall Cashpoint was installed, enabling people to access their cash from outside the branch.

The 1980s - Cash for the masses
In 1981, we celebrated our 1,000th cashpoint in the country at our Manchester Piccadilly branch.

The 1990s - Going online
By 1998 we’d launched our Internet Banking service which allowed people to do all the basics of online banking, like checking your statement, transferring funds, or setting up direct debits.

The 2000s - The introduction of text banking
In 2009, we became the first bank in the UK to launch 'on demand' text message balance updates for our customers. The service enabled subscribers to keep an eye on their account balances, as well as details of their last six transactions.
-
The 2010s - The launch of mobile banking
We launched our first Mobile Banking app in 2012 as more and more of the country started using smartphones, allowing people to bank from anywhere on their mobile.

The 1950s - The roll-out of mechanisation
To automate bookkeeping, mechanisation of our banking processes began in the 1920s and the roll-out was in full-swing throughout the 1950s. Before then, most accounting was still carried out by pen and paper.
