Top tips for using your card abroad

Before you go

To help make your holiday or business trip as relaxing and stress-free as possible, here are a few things to keep in mind before leaving the UK.

Have an enjoyable trip!

When you're away

To help you relax when you're away, it's good to keep these in mind:

  • It's often better to pay in the local currency, if the card reader gives you the option. That way you avoid the overseas provider's currency conversion fees.
  • Some cash machines may charge a fee, even if we don't. This is the same as in the UK.
  • You get the same protection as you get in the UK. Our fraud and security systems are always on the lookout for suspicious activity on your accounts.

Thinking of using your card abroad

Here you can select the type of card you're thinking of using, to see more about using it while abroad. You can also find out about any fees you may be charged.

Overview on using your debit card abroad

Using your debit card abroad

You can use your debit card to spend or withdraw cash worldwide. Just use it in the same way you do at home, wherever you see the Visa symbol.

  • We convert card transactions into pounds using the Visa exchange rate
  • When using your card abroad, you should select to pay in the local currency in order to get this rate.
  • If you choose to pay in pounds, the provider will do the currency conversion and there may be separate charges for this, which are often higher.
  • We don't set any additional limits on how much cash you can withdraw each day when you're abroad.

Costs for using your debit card abroad

Club, Silver, Gold, Platinum or Premier account holders

We don't charge any fees when you use your debit card to shop or withdraw cash abroad. So the amount you pay in pounds is just based on the Visa exchange rate conversion.

Classic or Basic account holders

You can add Travel Smart to your account to use your debit card abroad without any fees from us in your selected weeks. Otherwise, fees apply. You can check them here.

Overview on using your credit card abroad

Using your credit card abroad

You can use your credit card to pay for things abroad in the same way you would at home. You also get the same level of protection under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974.

If you make a non-sterling purchase, as well as being subject to the Mastercard or Visa exchange rate, you may be charged interest and fees. Take some time to check the fees that may apply when using your credit card for foreign currency transactions.
